WoW causes Swedish kid to collapse

Bad case of Wrath of the Lich King
Wednesday, 19 November 2008, 07:34

A SWEDISH schoolkid's brain went bork, bork, bork after playing the new expansion to the World of Warcraft online computer game.

The 15-year-old boy and his friends were exploring the new Wrath of the Lich King content when he suffered what appeared to be a grand mal seizure.

According to the kid's dad, he had been playing the expansion pack all day and all night for 24 hours and didn’t eat much.

The Kvällsposten newspaper in Sweden said that doctors examining the boy said that his bodily systems had been disrupted by a combination of sleep deprivation, lack of food and the prolonged period of concentration playing the game.

He is expected to make a full recovery but his father said he plans on limiting the amount of time his son is allowed to play computer games.

We should point out that the story comes from Fox news which has a nice habit of blaming all the world's ills on the Democrats and computer games. µ

Not all bull, probably just Red...

It should be noted that they drank lots of energy drinks, which are known to have caused problems before.

What is Fox News?

Mainstream media's agenda is simply akin to that of it's monopolist owners; neither group I will ever trust.

barbaric

Well spoken. And anyway, what kind of a father is this that doesn't bring his son any food and drink for 24 hours?? I've enjoyed watching my own son join forces with his usual 'raiding party' with his girl character in pigtails dressed up in outrageous gear. These kids deserve our respect! They join forces, settle disagreements, help each other, communicate, dive into the mythological places that are so sorely needed to foster creativity and imagination. I bow to everyone who has braved the virtual elements in this way. May you play WoW as long as it is good for you, and may you take into your real life everything you learn there!

grand mal seizure

"...We should point out that the story comes from Fox news which has a nice habit of blaming all the world's ills on the Democrats and computer games..." Nick, a year ago my son, now 16, played WOW too and had a grand mal seizure. It was terrible to see my son laying on the floor without conciseness. We later find on the web that there are other kids too with the same affect after playing WOW for many hours. How many before the seizure depend on other elements and how much some kid is sensitive on lights affects, which are very strong in this game. It doesn't mean that every kid will get it, but there is substantial risk of it. My son never played WOW afterwards and he never have seizure eider. So please, be more careful with irony in your comments, because I hope you do understand that this kind of seizures may permanently affect kids brain. Just to clear things, although 46 I'm playing games too, but strategies and driving simulations and my brain is not in "development" as of kids who are playing games with very strong light affects.

Are you kidding me

Fox news is the most balanced news out there. ALl the others are slanted so far left you fall over watching them. Give me a break. Liberal writing this story is the problem. CNN, MSNBC, NBC, etc etc blame republicans and christians for all the worlds problems. Where is that in your article?? I'm sure you won't let this comment thru but it's true.

WoW Causes?

WoW causes Swedish kid to collapse? Surely a better headline would be, "Idiocy causes Swedish kid to collapse" as saying that WoW causes the collapse that somehow it suggests that it is to blame. The only reason the kid collapsed is due to the idiocy of himself, friends and family. Though it is amusing to imagine that Blizzard trapped him in a room and forced him to play until he collapsed.

Erm...

Warcraft didn't cause this kids to collapse. Exhaustion caused by his own stupidity did. What were the parents thinking? Where was his common sense? Hopefully his parents will take note of his little hobby and restrict hours to, I don't know, between 8am and midnight. At least then he'll get some sleep and stop giving gamers a bad image.

Blizzard somewhat responsible

Well, even if Blizzard or WoW employees DIDN'T lock him up, they sure made the application that caused the seizures. Of course, this might not have happened if he took better care of himself (eating, drinking and sleeping better) but the fact that he still got the seizure playing their game, it's fair enough (when we're talking epileptic seizures) to assume that's what triggered it.

Help!!!

Help! Blizzard have me trapped in a room with a new expansion pack, a character I need to level from 55 to level 80, and no way of going to the bathroom! Please send help! This is an escort quest. I will move very slowly and do things that will hamper your attempts to liberate me.

Gaming is not for everyone!

If you thought thee was no harm in just pulling an overnight gaming session, think again! But obviously this is a freak event & this kid is really a light weight. I remember when starcraft was just out, I was playing that for like 9 months with very little sleep. I often playing 16 hours straight & even managed a 48 hour "session" once. Naturally this has not affected my brain, I'm perfectly sane, honest, even if my wife says "that's not entirely true". Remember, everything in moderation, same goes for sanity.

Child Abuse

WoW didn't do this, the father did by negligently allowing the kid to go without sleep and food!

All day and all night?

As one who has to take prescriptions for seisures. Lack of sleep/food, lights, and stress are all factors that can cause them. My question is this... what the heck is the parent doing letting him play as long as he did? I'd kick his ASCII code to the supper table for one thing. E Wolfram, are you suggesting bringing him food??? Call yourself slave from now on, maybe you have a problem with video games yourself to think that's normal. You might be 46 with no problems now... Your son might not have a problem ... yet btw There's lots of schedulers out there that restrict access between certain times, Vista has it built right in, that's why my 14 yr old swears at me (thinks it anyway) at 9:30 on a school night

WoW - or stupidity?

I know, "WoW causes kid to collapse" sounds much more dramatic than "Stupidity causes kid to collapse". Many ancient old dodderers (those who've exited their teenage years and entered fossilhood) would be totally unsurprised by the second headline, and, indeed, might wonder why more teenagers weren't lying in a state of collapse. But really, it's the fault of WoW. Yep. They made the game, it's all their fault. They forced the kid to play so long, and drink energy drinks instead of food. It's all the fault of food manufacturers that people are fat, of car manufacturers that people die in car crashes, and as for parents...

A new low

Do you realize that you just tried to discredit the source from which you nicked this story? It's hard to believe, Nick, but you've sunken to a new low of journalism.

@Larry

First of all, your comment was published, so you see, you're wrong there. Second, if you think Fox news is not slanted and, on top of that, you say that all the others are, you should be asking yourself if, per chance, Fox News wouldn't be slanted but just in your direction. I'm happy that you're happy with a "news" channel, though. Personally I think they're all crap and under government or corporate jurisdiction. Not a journalist among them.

What a rookie..

Collapsed after a night of arduous gaming? What a rookie noob, you need to plan ahead for major game releases and get your sleep & food planned ahead of time. That way you can tackle it like a champion. No one probably noticed he was missing in game anyways since he was bad at it.

Mainstream Media Suck

Why any of you people get your "news" from the MSM is beyond me. The people who stand up for anyone of them are jokes! Ohhh, I love Fox, I love CNN, NBC, BBC,CBS give me a break, you're all stupid. Fox leans extremely to the right and they suck just like the rest of them, liberal and all. Try to get some reliable news from the center.

Choice - we've all heard of it

Every time I see an article like this, I laugh. Yes, I know that siezures and such aren't a laughing matter, but the idiots bringing this on themselves are - regardless of what medical afflictions they may or may not have. They have a choice: sit there for hours on end and cause problems, or get up and live. A friend and I recently bought the latest expansion and, after less than 10 days, made our way steadily to the "end-game." We would play for in excess of 12 hours per day, but we did it responsibly (or as responsibly as you can get with such extended sessions) - we took bathroom/toilet breaks, we took breaks to prepare, cook and subsequently eat meals, we even took breaks just because we felt like stretching our legs a bit, and we made sure to squeeze in 8 hours of sleep a night, just for good measure. Hell, there were even some bad storms around during that time and we took breaks to go investigate any possible damage that may have been caused by the rain, winds and lightning; we didn't put our lives on hold just for a game. We chose not to risk physical harm to ourselves and acted on that choice. Anyone who chooses differently deserves what they get. (My appologies to the earlier commenter who's child had problems. Hopefully they [the child] will learn from this and won't do that to themselves again, though I can't say I'm overly confidant in that.)
